Holiday Gorge Floor Hike

Saturday, September 1, 10:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.

Tallulah Gorge State Park - Tallulah Falls, This is a strenuous trek; include hiking down 531 stairs, a river crossing jumping from rock to rock, and climbing boulders along the side of the river to Bridal Veil Falls where you can swim. Total miles are 3.5. No pets; wear appropriate footwear; children must be 10 or older; bring food and water. $5 plus $5 parking. (706) 754-7981.

Tallulah Gorge State Park - Tallulah Falls, Enjoy the gorge in the magical, shimmering light of the full moon. The hike will begin at the Interpretive Center, following the North Rim Trail, with a descent of the Hurricane Falls Trail staircase to the suspension bridge over Hurricane Falls. This is considered a strenuous hike, consisting of approximately 1.5 miles and 1,099 steps. Register in advance. $5 plus $5 parking. (706) 754-7981.

Tugaloo Triathlon

Saturday, September 8, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Tugaloo State Park - LavoniaParticipants will swim 1.5 kilometers, bicycle 42 kilometers and run 10 kilometers in this Olympic-style event that is exciting for spectators as well as participants. Space is limited, so athletes should sign up early. Do it or watch it! Co-sponsored by Tri-Atlanta Multisports Association and Friends of Tugaloo State Park. $5 parking. (706) 356-4362.

Mountain Music and Arts and Craft Festival

Saturday, September 8, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Vogel State Park - Blairsville

This popular event includes Appalachian, bluegrass and gospel music. There will also be art and craft booths with handmade items for sale, and food concessions provided by Vogel Volunteers. $2-$5 plus $5 parking. (706) 745-2628.

Youth Fishing Days at Buck Shoals

Saturday, September 15, 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

Smithgall Woods State Park - Helen

Children and their special "big person" can fish in a lake stocked with catfish, bass and bream. Fish caught can be kept. Bring your own bait (no corn) and rods. This event is not at Smithgall Woods, but at Buck Shoals, a nearby-unopened state park. Call for directions. Occurs every third Saturday through September. $5 parking. (706) 878-3087.

Historical Rock Hike

Tallulah Gorge State Park - Tallulah Falls

Prepare for a very strenuous hike to see unique rock formations that were named in the late 1800s. We will be hiking off the beaten trail along steep cliffs, down treacherous embankments and rocky terrain. Bring lunch and water. $5 plus $5 parking. (706) 754-7981.

Traveler's Rest Pioneer Days

Saturday, September 15, 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Travelers Rest Historic Site - Toccoa

Talents and skills of the early 1800s pioneers are brought back to life. Demonstrators will be on hand for spinning, weaving, blacksmithing, hearth cooking, doll making and other pioneer skills. Visitors will also enjoy live period music and dancing. $2.75-$4. (706) 886-2256.

Suwannee River Clean up

Full Moon Bike Ride Down Suwannee River Sill

Bring your bike for this ranger-led ride under the full moon. Look for alligator's eyes shining bright red. Listen to gators bellowing and to a chorus of frogs and toads. A Murder Mystery in Colonial Darien

Roosevelt's Little White House Historic Site - Warm Springs

Swim in the historic pools built by President F.D. Roosevelt as a place for therapy. Normally kept empty for preservation, the shallow pools will be filled with naturally warm spring water. Tickets may be purchased over the phone with credit card. Space is limited to 80 per session. Reservations suggested. Introduction to Fly-fishing

Geology Hike

Sweetwater Creek State Park - Lithia Springs

Geologist and "Friends of Sweetwater Creek State Park" member John Johnston will lead a moderate 2-mile hike identifying rock types and explaining how they formed. Candlelight Hike to the Mill

Sweetwater Creek State Park - Lithia Springs

This mile-long guided night hike is easy to moderately difficult and goes inside the Civil War era textile mill ruins of New Manchester. Candle lanterns will be provided.
